Our clinical Hypnotherapist David Costello has detailed below a recent case of needle phobia. Hypnotherapy – effective treatment for fear of needles " Hypnotherapy is a rapid and effective intervention for modifying our responses and reactions to particular situations that have begun to become associated with fear, dread and anxiety. Perhaps just one bad experience – whether it is in the dentist’s chair or on a holiday fight – results in years of phobia and avoidance. Whilst certain fear inducing situations can simply be avoided – perhaps taking a holiday at home instead of flying abroad – others can become life threatening. I recently treated a young lady who had developed a needle phobia. Things had come to a head when she needed a biopsy for a potential tumour. After two failed attempts by the doctor to carry out the procedure - which then had to be abandoned due to extreme panic – a friend of the family recommended hypnotherapy. In just 3 sessions, the client learnt to take herself into a safe place of relaxation, to understand that her mind could ‘be in two places at once’. Using a combination of relaxation techniques linked in hypnosis to personalised visual images of relaxation, she was able to learn to modify her body’s responses and reactions, so that the procedure could take place easily. The surgeon was so impressed with the difference in presentation that he was keen to find out what had happened to the client! Hypnotherapy isn’t just for the common lifestyle issues like smoking cessation or weight control – it can also be incredibly effective for helping us to better control and manage our emotions and internal states in potentially fear inducing situations that we know are coming up in the future – taking a driving test, giving a presentation at work, getting married or even giving birth. If you have a particular fear of concern that is limiting your enjoyment of life, please contact me to discuss whether hypnotherapy can help! " Dave Costello Clinical Hypnotherapist Acupuncture Acupuncture can treat a wide variety of conditions through its ability to stimulate the body’s own healing response. This means that anyone can benefit. Energy flows through acupuncture points found along energy channels known as meridians which run along the skin. When energy is flowing smoothly you feel well and in good health. Obstructions along these meridians lead to imbalances and symptoms appear. Obstructions can appear in response to physical changes, but can also be related to anxiety, stress, grief and anger. Acupuncture aims to find the cause of the problem as treating the symptoms alone will not affect a permanent cure. It can also be used to prevent illness and maintain good health. Acupuncture is suitable for any illness, chronic or short-lived, including: Migraine Arthritis Depression Stress Insomnia Fatigue Anxiety Asthma Skin disorders Circulatory problems Digestive disorders Menstrual problems Infertility Pregnancy care Back problems Sports injuries Your emotional wellbeing is as important as your physical health. Acupuncture treats the mind and body at the same time, so that when physical problems are treated, you will feel better in yourself, be more relaxed and find that your sleep is improved. During the first consultation, which can take up to 2 hours, the practitioner listens to the patient and takes a complete medical history. Your acupuncturist will ask you about physical problems and also any emotional stress you are experiencing. Anything discussed is completely confidential. The diagnosis also includes a short physical examination. In all treatments, only sterile, disposable, single-use needles are used. On average you can expect to see a significant improvement in your condition after 5 treatments. Initially, you come once a week, with treatments spacing out over time. Everyone responds differently to acupuncture and sometimes the effects are dramatic after the first treatment, whereas others need more than 6 before they start to feel better. Longstanding problems take longer to heal than recent ones. Rachel Edney was awarded a Licentiate in Acupuncture from the School of Five Element Acupuncture in London following three years training. She has received further training in fertility acupuncture at the College of Traditional Acupuncture and is certified in facial revitalisation acupuncture. Rachel is a member of the British Acupuncture Council (www.acupuncture.org.uk) which guarantees an approved standard of training in both Chinese and Western medicine. Members are bound by the Council’s Code of Safe Practice, Ethical and Professional Conduct and are covered by their Professional and Public Liability Insurance.
